Saunders Mountain Marathon
Congratulations to all the BodyFit Runners who competed in the Saunders Mountain Marathon on the 5th July. These included Anita Barker and Julie Norman (Harter Fell Class), Mike Harrison, Ange Jackson, Lewis Taylor, Mel Bradley, Jennie Chatterley and Sam Ayers (all on the Kirkfell Class). The Saunders is a two day event which involves navigation in the fells whist carrying enough kit for overnight camping and food for two days. As you can see, the weather on day two was challenging to say the least. Sam and Jen were the first women's team in the Kirkfell Class.

BodyFit 5K Race Results
A big thank you for turning out tonight and competing in the BodyFit 5K Race. It was fantastic to see so many people joining in... especially with the downpour immediately before the start! Some very positive people said they were thankful because it cooled them down!
Many thanks as ever, to all the marshals, helpers, time keepers (and suppliers of cake) who all gave their time and energy so that you could all compete in the race. Please make sure that you thank them when you next race.
Also a big congratulations to all those from my beginner's running class who successfully completed their first 5K race. Well done.

Duncan did the first ever Brighton Marathon and thoroughly recommends it to anyone contemplating the distance. The race was very well organised and the support from the locals was fantastic. The photo was taken at 18.5 miles... and Duncan is looking incredibly fresh - well done! Duncan was helped with his marathon training by Sam. Juniors with Winning Ways
Congratulations to Lewis Taylor (pictured) who is now the U18 Northern Orienteering Champion. He beat his rival but good friend Tom, by approximately one minute to record a time of 69:28 for the 9.2km course. The race took place last weekend in the Peak District.
The conditions were near perfect for running, cold with many of the moorland marshes partially frozen. The terrain was a mixture between wooded, boulder strewn steep hillsides - with the climbing edges of Froggat, Curbar and Baslow towering above. This was technical with only large boulders mapped - some as big as houses! You had to keep your concentration here, then the planner took you out onto Big Moor with some long, fast but energy sapping legs. This was tussocky and heathery terrain. The courses were then brought back into the technical terrrain, with one last small, but uphill detour into the heather. The M18 Elite course was 9.2 km with 250 m of climb. Lewis was also the first placed M18E in the middle distance race the day before - so an inspiring and morale boosting weekend.
Congratulation also to Molly Wilkinson (U16) and Millie Park(U8) who both won their age group races at last weekend's Blake's Heaven Fell race.

Sam, Tracy Park, Hazel Davies and Duncan Lightfoot are hard at marathon training. Hazel will be racing her first Marathon in early March and has chosen the Barcelona Marathon. Duncan is also doing his first Marathon which will be Brighton in April. Tracy and Sam are doing the London Marathon on Saturday 25th April, both have a 'Championship Start' which means they'll be off very near the front and not get caught up in the crowds - so no excuses! Hazel, Sam and Tracy train together on Thursdays at 10.45am.
If anyone of roughly similar speed would like to join them, contact .

Huge thank you from Fells Angels and Friends...
The Fells Angels and Friends would like to say a HUGE thank you to the hundreds of people who sponsored them. They beat Billy Bland's Bob Graham Round record (by minutes rather than hours!) but far more importantly they raised more than £20,000 for their two charities. More than 100 runners, including King Billy himself and Joss Naylor, took part and there were masses of supporters. A fantastic day was had by all and the Angels and Friends are very grateful for everyone's contributions.

Help raising funds for Neonatal Unit...
Pete Haley, who many of you will know from running classes, is raising funds for the Neonatal Unit in Middlesbrough in appreciation of the fantastic support they gave his family following the premature birth of their twin sons. Please assist if you can.
Pete will be running in the Cumbrian Run and following a training programme given to him by Sam. If you'd like to support, you can either sponsor Pete directly or take part in the 'Weekly Weigh In'. More details are given in Pete's letter below.
Dear friends,
As you know our twin boys, Daniel and Michael were born extremely premature on the 27th March in James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. Sadly our beloved Daniel died on the 1st of April at the RVI in Newcastle.
Thanks to the amazing staff in the Neonatal Unit in Middlesbrough, Michael has amazed us with the progress he has made despite many problems along the way (such as an operation to close a duct and laser surgery to correct damage to his eyes). Michael was transferred to West Cumberland Hospital on the 3rd of July. He came home on the 22nd of July and has been on a trickle of oxygen but is needing less each day. The nurse and physiotherapist are pleased with his progress regarding growth, strength and mobility. Michael is currently 7lb 9oz and drinking milk for England! I am running the Cumbrian Run to raise funds for the Neonatal Unit in appreciation of the fantastic support they gave to all three of us. Most of the equipment used in the Neonatal Unit was paid for by donations made to the NHS Trust and we want to help it continue to provide first class care. I can't promise that I will beat last year's time of 1 hour 41 but I'll do my best. Alternatively, you can take part in the Weekly Weight In. I'm doing this in a bid to lose a bit of weight before the run. This will happen each week at the Muster Run (Thursday 6pm). It will cost £1 to be weighed each week. If you don't lose weight (and you want to), it will cost you a further £1! The weigh in will start tomorrow (Thursday 13th August) and will keep going until the Cumbrian Run.
Any sponsorship you can help me raise will be gratefully received and put to good use by the Neonatal Unit.
Many thanks, Pete Haley.

The Fells' Angels are back...
...and this time they're determined to break a world record and raise thousand of pounds for charity, with a little help from a lot of friends. Two years ago the five West Cumbrian women ran the 72-mile Bob Graham Round, in relay form, and raised more than £3,000 for Hospice at Home. Now they are determined to break the BG record set by legendary fellrunner Billy Bland, who ran the round in 13 hours 53 minutes in 1982. Over the years, many people have tried to beat Billy's time - but few have come anywhere near. The Fells' Angels are determined to smash it - with the help of some friends, 67 to be precise. Each of them will run one mile. The BG Round includes 42 Lake District summits and 28,500ft of ascent. The Fells' Angels and Friends are asking each of the 72 runners to raise at least £100 in sponsorship, which means the event should raise more than £7,000. The runners' money will go to Crawford House in Newcastle, which provides 'Home from Home' accommodation for families whose children are receiving hospital treatment for serious illness. All other donations will go to the North of England Children's Cancer Research, which was founded by parents to raise money for research into childhood cancer.
The FAF will set off from Moot Hall, Keswick, at 4am on Saturday, August 29.
See Fells' Angels & Friends for further details and to donate.

Congratulations to C2C ladies
Congratulations to Julia, Nikki V, Andrea, Nikki, Sara, and Sabine on completing the C2C last weekend. A great achievement in what were less than ideal conditions.
Hi Sam,
Yes, the rumours are correct...we made it. Despite mostly foul conditions (horizontal hail up Hartside) we ended in sunshine on each day and managed fairly comfortably, though some more saddle-soggy than others! We managed to keep spirits high, and sometimes hysterical, and really enjoyed the sense of camaraderie with other cyclists along the route.
We had a lovely family reception at sunny Tynemouth, and celebrated with shandy and cake...scrumptious.
Thanks so much for your help and support; your training programme was praised often, especially when we were able to cycle pass guys pushing uphill (with NO panniers!). None of us expected to be able to cycle up Crawleyside a few weeks ago, but the Jelly Babies did us proud!
Thanks again Sam, we couldn't have done it without you,
Julia and co.

Sam beaten by virus
Unfortunately, after weeks of trying to fight off a cold virus, Sam and her coach decided that she shouldn't run in this year's Flora London Marathon. Sam is very disappointed but feels it is the sensible decision. It now leaves only Julie Carter from Cumberland Fell Runners on the Championship start - fellow club runner Tracey Park had decided to withdraw some weeks ago following a prolonged bout of illness. The dreams of Cumberland Fell Runners taking the Ladies Marathon Team Championship will have to be put off for another year. Good luck to Julie and all the other runners on Sunday's start line.

Stuart Pyper achieves Half Marathon PB in Edinburgh
Hard, consistent training have paid dividends for Stuart who completed the Edinburgh Half Marathon on the weekend in an outstanding personal best time of 01:22:09. This was good enough for Stuart, a member of Cumberland Fell Runners, to get 32nd in the event which attracted a field of over two and half thousand runners. Sam has been helping Stuart to develop his training programme in personal planning sessions and in her running classes which he regularly attends.

Challenge Event!
Ladies... how about a midnight walk or run? Hospice at Home West Cumbria are organising this unusual night out in Whitehaven on Friday 5th June. Bob Barnby (organiser) has said that anyone wanting to run will be allocated a place at the front.
Sunday 7th September, 2008
Sam qualifies for elite start at the London Marathon 2009.
Sam earned her place by completing the Lancaster Half Marathon in a personal best time of 1 hour 28 minutes and 54 seconds; well under the 1 hour 30 minute time required to start at the front of the marathon race with the other elite athletes such as World record holder Paula Radcliffe.
If you are entered for London Marathon or indeed any other race then why not let BodyFit Personal Training help.
As an individual client who is training for a specific athletic goal such as a race or event you can be provided with a periodised training schedule. This will be designed around you and will ensure that you are thoroughly prepared and given the best opportunity to achieve your goals.
